to drop off which is good news for the elevated fire danger, our temperatures are going to soar up. your full forecast. we will let you know and finally get some heat relief. just in, a new crash for the eastshore freeway involving a brewery truck from the reports. i'm also focusing on the fremont slowing. another crash for 880. taking a live look outside. the sun coming up over the bay area making way for the hottest day on tap. you made it to thursday, may 2nd. this is "today in the bay." good morning, everybody. it is 6:00. thanks for getting up early with us. i'm jon kelley. >> i'm laura garcia cannon. fire investigators looking at the possibility the hot weather may have played a role in an overnight fire. the blaze erupted just before 11:30 at a garage area at a home, rather, on almadon avenue. "today in the bay" ace christie

smith, live at the scene with an update. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. i just spoke briefly with the property owner off camera. he was a little shaken up but just wanted to say that everyone is okay. apparently, what happened here is that someone was inside the garage charging a battery and then heard an explosion a short time later. that's what got this fire moving. the damage pretty bad outside. the weather dry and hot. those were the conditions. firefighters looking into weather that may have played a role into fanning this fire. when they arrived, they say it was already moving. the flames pretty big here. burning sheds and trailers on this property that goes back pretty deep in the back. because there were buildings close by, firefighters quickly called a second alarm and arson investigators were called to the scene. >> cause of the fire, we are believing to be a battery that may have exploded. one of the residents said they were charging a battery and

heard it explode and things were on fire. that's what we are working on right now as the cause of the fire. >> no reports of any injuries. that's the good news. several people were displaced. there are a number of trailers on the property. then, there was another potential hazardous situation. there were chemicals stored in the garage and on the property. so they needed to bring in hazardous material crews to deal with that. they were trying to stop any runoff into drains. right now, firefighters are gone but, of course, the issue, trying to pick up the pieces from all this. reporting live in san jose, christie smith, "today in the bay." a developing story going on in the north bay where today's hot weather and gusty winds might keep firefighters were getting the upper hand on a fire northwest of cal astow ga. the yellow fire burning through 125 acres. the fire just 50% contained. full containment, we are being told, is expected by this evening. another fire on the silverado

trail north of napa had burned 75 acres. good news. that one is completely contained also developing, in southern california, a wind-fueled wild fire is burning across 4 1/2 square miles just west of palm springs in banning. one home destroyed. one neighborhood under evacuation. we have a live look at the smoking conditions in the area this morning. 29-mile-per-hour winds driving those flames westward through the foothills of the san bernardino mountains. right now, that fire is only 35% contained. >> with that not so perfect storm involved, much of southern california and parts of the bay area, still under the red flag warning this morning let's check the conditions with meteorologist, christina loren. although the winds are dropping off, laura and jon, we are going to keep that going because conditions are pretty dangerous. 56 degrees in livermore. 56 in san jose. we are starting out really mild. we have a heat advisory in place

because temperatures are going to be even warmer than where we ended up yesterday. this will be the hottest day of the year so far. want to make sure you are ready for it. that wind advisory stands from 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. it is going to be a hot night as well. temperatures are going to be down right mild. let's give you an update on the llow fire. want to give you some perspective as to where it is and what we are working with out there. 125 acres, 150 percent containment. we are still going to get the dry winds. 5-15 miles an hour sustained. humidity, very, very low, 10%-30%. your temps are going to be running between the mid-80s to low 90s. you want to keep in mind, high fire danger at least until noon. it might extend if we see the winds continue to pump. we might have to extend the high fire danger. we are going to let you know today at 11:00 and give you a st status update. 97 degrees.

that is the forecasted high for livermore. that should break an old record of 96. records with oakland touching on 90 degrees. it is going to be hot out there. elsewhere, 98 in fairfield, 91, santa rosa. 83 degrees in san francisco. we have a major cooldown and some rain headed our way. we will talk about when that time is out. coming up, first, want to get you to work on time. here is our own mike inouye. chp reports as the commute builds here in fremont. we are looking at 880 southbound with the head lights. you are okay here down by the truck scales and this auto here. from dakota, the dumbarton bridge cutoff, reports of a two-car crash in middle lanes. two chp units arrived on scene. they may have to move folks over to the shoulder. i have seen the slowdown shift around. still slow right at thornton, reporting the issue. there is commotion. may be some more slowing.

crews just arrived on scene. the eastshore freeway is relatively smooth. we have a brewery truck reportedly being hit off the eastshore freeway, west 880. i did find this. the live picture. there it is, the white truck. i don't know how they knew it was a brewery struck. a chevy cavalier hit the big rig. we see folks walking around. the cavalier probably didn't do as well as the big rig. the commute moves smoothly toward the bay bridge toll plaza. the commute continues to build. no big drama right now. it is going to really start kicking in over the next half hour. north 101 underneeth the 680. the man accused of arranging to meet a foster city girl for sex faces formal charges.

out of control in southern california. the summit fire has already burned close to 3,000 acres there, destroying at least one home. firefighters say this is only about 35% contained. president obama leaves for mexico for a meeting with the mexican president. he is expected to discuss, trade, immigration and drug violence senator barbara boxer introducing legislation that would require the fda to label genetically modified foods nationwide. they rejected that last year. 6:11. to a story every woman needs to hear this morning. could our lipstick be bad for our health? a new study out of uc berkeley this morning shows almost three dozen lipsticks and glosses contain harmful metals. the study's author is calling on the fda to take notice.

"today in the bay's" marla day yez litallez live with the stor. a lot of the ladies at home welcome to the nbc bay area makeup room. who knew that simply doing a little bit of this could be potentially bad for our health. it is the last thing we want to think about when we are getting ready. researchers say we may have to worry about our lipsticks and lip glosses. they tested 32 different lipsticks and lip glosses that are commonly found in drug stores and department stores. they are not saying which brands they tested. that's why we are showing you these generic lipsticks. what we do know, line metals in all were detected, cadmium, chrome yun, aluminum and lead. lead isn't the concern. we have seen studies before showing it is present in lipsticks but at acceptable levels. the red flag is the amount of

chromium that is detected. it is a known carcinogen linked to stomach tumors and manganese was found linked to problems with the nervous system. applying and reapplying your color and gloss two to three times a day could result in overexposure of these metals. what do we do, ladies? the researchers at uc berkeley are not recommended we toss our lipsticks and glosses but they recommend we blot. boss tom li bottom line, more testing needs to be done if you would like to read more about the study. it is published online. as of today, you can find it in the journal of environmental health perspectives. live from the nbc bay area makeup room, i'm marla tallez, "today in the bay." >> interesting to take note of. so many people getting ready. >> absolutely. specially the ladies jc penney, not a great run

this is the first time a company ran a tv ad apologizing for making things cheaper. stocks this morning will be watching intel. just into our newsroom, we got news from intel that they will promote their chief operating officer to ceo. this is brian kraznich. he will be leaving the company on may 16th. we didn't know who would be replacing him. have you heard of that florida teenager, charged with a felony for what she says was a science experiment gone wrong. she had brought home pieces of an experiment where she at school had mixed together several chemicals into a water bottle getting lots of play on cable news this morning. it exploded at school. it was a simple experiment, jon and laura. nothing really all that big of a deal. i can't really tell you what chemicals she used but, let's

maybe you also have been following what's been going on off the court between the two teams verbally between specially the head coach of the warriors, mark jackson, after tuesday night's loss to the denver nuggets in denver accusing the nuggets offer dirty play, saying they sent a quote hit man after his top player, his star player, steph curry, who has had issued with one of his ankles, accusing this against kenneth farid, a forward for the nuggets. farid saying tonight is also going to be rough. interesting to see whether that play plays out. no one twoonts see injuries. you could see some intense competition, considering what's on the line. if the nuggets win, this he advance to round two of the nba playoffs. as i mentioned, that would be their first time since '07. as you would not be surprised to hear, tonight's game here at oracle arena is sold out. we are talking about with 19,596

seats, just shy of 20,000. this is the 35th consecutive sellout for the team. that is a franchise record there. here, you have got this team for years that's been quiet. you look at the place. this is going to be the roaracle arena. you will see the yellow and blue t-shirts. every fan gets one. some seats are empty. they are short about 3,000. the team obviously was not expecting to lose tuesday night. once they did, they said, we are going to have a bunch of fans here tonight. we better get some t-shirts. they have a rush order in. the other 3,001 should be here. the other 3,000 will be here in time for tonight's game. if you are lucky enough to have gotten a ticket, you will be walking away with one of these t-shirts. if you are lucky enough to be sitting courtside, i want to be your friend.

if this heat has prompted you to hit the beach. work has kept you from getting out there. saturday is looking like a better day. we will finally get heat relief on sunday. we have a heat advisory in place from 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. we are not going to see our temperatures drop off that much. we will meet back here tomorrow. today, i want to make sure you are watching those pets and monitoring those pets and don't want to leave them in the car with the windows up for any duration of time. 70 degrees is too warm for them. here is the good news. air quality has improved. we are in the good range all across the bay area. open up the windows in your home if you want to. you can breath in the air. we are not suffering like we traditionally do. that's the good news. go ahead and feel free to breath it in. our pollen levels are rather high. have to point that out. they will be until the winds start to relax. high pressure still in control. today, it gains some energy. for us, that will result in a warmer day. we are talking about records yet

towards oakland. this over on the shoulder. big rig hit by this little cavalier right here. chp arrived. there was a good deal of slowing for three to four minutes. they started to move more smoothly. it is not a big deal. they always see stuff going on. the bay bridge toll plaza as folks get through the area, moving smoothly. the build continuing past the 880 overcrossing. we are looking over toward the maps of the area. as you are coming down through berkeley and emeryville, you are seeing the volume causing the issue of slowing. a nice drive coming out of richmond as well. 24, the caldecott, no problems, oakland past the oracle arena. 7:30 game time. jamming up now as you are coming towards 84. no updates. it sounds like they are moving out. i see the speeds picking up. watch for the activity, though. clear once you get towards malry.

how is this for a story? a missing mother turns up 11 years after they vanished without a trace. bren bren brenda heist is telling police in florida she abandoned her children at the spur of the moment to become homeless. she said she was going through a divorce when she snapped after dropping her children off at school. she says, she decided to join three strangers as they hitch hiked down to florida. she contacted no one, used fake names and eventually was declared legally dead. her daughter now to college and her son a recent college graduate. both have expressed interest in actually meeting again with their long, lost mother. >> that's a crazy story.

york stock exchange live ringing in the day out there. . out on this stock exchange on thursday, may 2nd, "today in the bay." ringing in the bell and taking in the money. i'm laura garcia cannon. good morning, everybody. we are learning new details this morning about three young men chargeded with helping to cover up key evidence linking their friend, dzhokhar tsarnaev to the boston bombings. we understand these friends sent text messages to tsarnaev while he was on the run. >> there were text messages going back and forth, including one that the fbi said, come and get what you want from tsarnaev to his friends. they took that as a message he wasn't coming back after recognizing his picture on tv. now, authorities don't think they were involved in the planning of all this but they do think they were involved after

the fact getting rid of evidence. authorities have had their eyes on the three u-mass suspects for more than a week. two have been jailed. now, robel phillipos is charged with sfauls statements and dias is caused with conspiracy to obstruct justice. >> he is just as shocked and horrified as the violence that took place. >> reporter: investigators say the suspects took a back of empty backpacks and fireworks to keep him out of trouble. >> they did not know those were involved in a bombing. >> reporter: prosecutors say one of the suspects set off fireworks with tsarnaev a month ago. >> they said a month before the bombing, tsarnaev told him he knew how to make a bomb. >> this should not raise any concerns in anyone's mind about a continuing threat to the

public. >> reporter: in washington, congress plans a hearing on the investigation, set to testify, boston's police commissioner, about whether the fbi told his agency what it knew about the tsarnaev brothers before the bombing. >> based on their charges and the charges are different, these suspects, the new ones, are looking at 5-8 years behind bars, $250,000 on fines. a couple are on visas from kazakhstan. two have submitted to voluntary detention. >> we will keep our eye on this one. tracie potts from washington, d.c., thank you very much. 6:52. we are also watching the weather as we give you a live look outside san jose. the sun is up. it is going to warm things up. we want to check the temperatures with meteorologist, christina loren. if you have that opportunity to get outdoors, any activities that you need to take care of, raking or getting the mail, do

it, the earlier, the better. right now is the coolest point of the day. 56 to start. 47 in gilroy and 51 degrees in santa cruz. i want to talk about this heat advisory. you see we are getting the yellow shading just about everywhere for the greater bay area, except right here at the immediate coast. that's where you will be spared. that's where temperatures will be bearable at the least. let's talk about the heat tip force today. you want to drink plenty of water, specially if you work outside. wear the light-colored clothing, breathable fabrics and take frequent breaks. the beach report shows you this is the pla es to be if you can get out there, 78 degrees in pacifica. 80 degrees in half moon bay. we are talking about the mid-80s in santa cruz. temperatures elsewhere are going to be warm. forecasting 98 degrees in places like fairfield and 97 degrees on the way to livermore. high pressure its strongest for today. those numbers are coming up. i will show you also when we really drop off and bring in the rain. all coming up in my next report.

first, want to check your drive and see how we are doing. mike is already tracking a few issues on a thursday among. >> things are calmer than yesterday. we are still looking at the build for the eastshore freeway. west 80, still, slows coming out of richmond and slowing back towards san pablo. underneath university avenue, it is moving smoothly. still, coming down with those speeds here as well. the backup at the toll plaza, still pretty standard. the tri-valley, the build for 580, 84 through livermore. 680 down through sunol out of pleasanton. now, coming out of castro valley, 238, also slow in the northbound direction. 880 slows to and past the san mateo bridge in towards union city for the build. that blends with more slowing from dakota down towards thornton. considerable slowing. chp on the scene and we never heard about the clearing of the lanes. chp did clear one of the units.

i'm trying to get clarification on whether we have any lanes after affected. the mission merge and things past that area have mooing smoothly for 880 and 680 northbound. 101 and 87, a start slow for san jose. 85 at the bottom of the screen. look at that. palo alto shows a representative of traffic flow. pretty light for 110 and 280. that sun coming southbound will be an issue for both freeways. back to you. a lot of people travel over the bay bridge. it is do esigned to stand up to new earthquake. this time, well to the base of the suspension tower. the metropolitan transportation commission confirms 20 welds are being repaired. they are located in the part of the bridge that controls the movement of the four suspension tower legs. uc berkeley professor is worried the bad welds may have compromised the seismic safety of the bridge.

>> these are important. we have to keep the legs together so they move together. it is like a table with four legs. if those four legs move in different directions, that's not going to be good. >> in a statement, a spokesperson for the metropolitan transportation commission says, there are millions of welds on the bridge. this issue involves about 20 of them. the mtc says the welds won't affect structural stability and will not affect the grand opening of the bridge planned for labor day weekend. caltrans working on a plan to replace old rail bridges in san mateo. the bridges at tilton, monta diablo and santa inez and popular avenue, all more than 100 years old. the bridges are structurally unsound and need to be replaced. the new bridges will be raised higher above the roadways and ensure caltrans is prepared for electrified rail service. a public meeting will be held tonight to inform residents

christina loren talking about 90s all over the bay area. she will be along shortly to tell us all about it. it is 6:39. we're going to be business any in new york where today work crews will raise the final pieces for the one world trade center. new york port authority officials say the spire will be lifted to a temporary work platform. the spire will serve as a broadcast antenna. when completed, one world trade center will stand more than 1700 feet tall. the raising of the pieces originally scheduled for monday. it was postponed because of weather issues this is supposed to be a peaceful may day marked for immigrants rights, it turns violent in seattle. protesters threw a rock, bottles, metal pipes and even fireworks at officers. this became a mess. officers ultimately had to use pepper spray and flash ban

wire burning out of control. >> only 35% contained. about 3,000 acres burned right thafrmt. >> making it tough all across the state. christina loren is here telling us what to expect as this continues to rage on. >> it is really dry out there. we haven't had any significant rainfall since the 4th of april. no april showers to keep things nice and moist in the bay area. the best thing you can do because this fire season has started so early is protect your home. if you live in the mountains in elevations above 1,000 feet, you know what i'm talking about when i say protect that defensible space. clear the twigs, brush, downed trees that could catch fire. you can do your part to help keep the bay area a little bit

safer. we can all do our part. winds tell you the story right here. typically, we get that cool sea breeze, cool air coming off the pacific, usually makes its way all the way inland and that's where we get the low cloud cover in the morning. no lou cloud cover. any marine layer that is able to develop is getting pushed right back out to sea by the strong offshore winds. that is the reason for the warm-ups. winds should drop off today. temperatures are going to creep up. 56 degrees to start the day in livermore. 56, san jose. 47, kind of refreshing down in gilroy for now. 1:00, heat advisory goes into effect for the greater bay area. the immediate coast is the only place where the heat advisory does stand. at 1:00 p.m., 88, antioch, 87 degrees in fremont at noon. we will round out the day at 98 in fairfield, 97, livermore, 90, fremont. 83 degrees in san francisco. look at oakland today. 90 degrees. here is with are it gets interesting. we want to take you through the evening hours. we stopped the clock on your

that the hot weather played a part in the overnight fire. a blaze eresulted in the garage area of a home on almoden avenue. kr christie smith joins us live. >> reporter: i just got off the phone with san jose firefighters. they tell me when it is hot and has been hot, over and over again, things can dry out and flames move more quickly. that's what happened here. there are garage, sheds, trailers here on the property in the back of the house. everything is a total loss in the back. when firefighters arrived about 11:20, they tell me they could see flames burning behind the home. they could see those from the street out front. that's just how tall these flames were. investigators tell me that a man was charging an old car battery in the garage and it suddenly exploded. that's what started the fire. they quickly called the second alarm because neighboring properties are so close by. one adjacent building was damaged. there are sheds and two trailers

here. that made access kind of difficult. >> a lot of things in the back. it was a lot of storage, different items, trailers, sheds, things like that in the back kind of making things difficult to get final extinguishment on. >> a hazardous incident team was called out because the number of chemicals were stored in the garage and on the property. there was concern about possible runoff from those chem caicals. i was told they burned up in the fire. this morning, four people displaced. i'm told they are getting help from the red cross. reporting live in san jose, christie smith, "today in the bay." the woman accused of leaving poisoned orange juice at a starbucks in san jose expected in court today. she is being charged with attempted murder. investigators say she mixed lethal amounts of rubbing alcohol and two bottles of orange juice and took them to the starbucks shop and simply left them on a shelf. a customer saw this happening, reported it and police

apprehended her. they have not released a motive. the police say it does appear she kt aed alone. it is still unclear this morning whether or not the man accused of stealing a yacht from salsalito will stand trial. this 63-year-old man, leslie allen gardner is able to aid in his defense. another says he is incompetent. a third report is expected next month. i stole a luxury yacht named the darling on march 4th. he and two others took the boat on a joyride before running it aground in pacifica. a morgan hill daycare teacher will be in court today. she is accused of drugging toddlers with sleeping pills. she has pleaded not guilty to child endangerment. a co-worker saw her slipping something into the children's grin drinks at the kiddie academy.

to hear, just to add a little bit of color to our face. researchers at uc berkeley school of public health tested 32 different lipsticks and lip glosses that are commonly found in drug stores and apartment stores. the lipsticks we are showing you here are labelless, generic, because the study doesn't list the brands researchers tested. with he know nine metals were detected in all including cadmium, chromium, aluminum, titanium, lead and man gganese. it has been linked to problems with the nervous system. the suddy says pl the study says applying and reapplying could result in overexposure of these metals. researchers admit, they come out and admit that the study is a very small study. more research needs to be done.
